What are the different types of stamps available?
When purchasing Royal Mail stamps, you may encounter various terms that describe their features and functionality. To help you, we have outlined the key terminology below:
- Gummed Stamps – Traditional stamps with a water-activated adhesive on the reverse. These require moistening before being affixed to mail.
- Self-Adhesive Stamps – Modern stamps with a peel-off backing, allowing for easy application without the need for moisture.
- Pictorial Stamps – Special edition stamps featuring unique designs, often issued to commemorate significant events, historical figures, or cultural moments.
- Barcoded Stamps – Stamps incorporating a unique barcode, enhancing tracking and security within the Royal Mail system. These are now standard for most postage requirements.
- Stamp Labels (StampLabel™) – Printed postage labels that function similarly to stamps but are generated at the point of sale. They may include tracking details or service-specific information.
